Bio
Nathalie Roseau is an architect and engineer, a PhD holder and a professor of urban planning. She is a professor of urban planning at the École nationale des ponts et chaussées and a research director at the Techniques, Territoires et Sociétés Laboratory (UMR CNRS 8134).
Taking a historical perspective, her work focuses on the dynamics of metropolitan transformation and the role played by infrastructure, its temporalities and its representations. Her PhD thesis (2008) examined the influence of aeronautics on the development of cities, from 1909 to the present day. Her habilitation thesis (2019) examined the role of infrastructure in processes of metropolitan expansion. As part of various research projects (international, European, editorial, interdisciplinary), her current work focuses on the relationship between mobile and urban cultures in the Anthropocene.
Nathalie Roseau has co-directed several research programmes on the history of aviation culture (with Marie Thébaud-Sorger) and the governance of major metropolises (with Frédéric Gilli, Christian Lefebvre and Tommaso Vitale). She co-founded and subsequently co-led (with Frédéric Pousin) the research programme Inventing Greater Paris, ‘Histoire croisée des métropoles’ and the digital humanities platform ‘www.inventerlegrandparis.fr’.
Before joining the École des Ponts in 2003, Nathalie Roseau worked as an architect and urban planner. From 1993 to 1997, she worked in the fields of urban and regional planning in Île-de-France (DREIF and DATAR). Then, from 1997 to 2003, she was part of the architectural project management team at Aéroports de Paris led by Paul Andreu, working as an architect responsible for the completion of Terminal 2F at Roissy and subsequently the renovation project for Terminal 1 (from initial sketches to detailed design). From 2009 to 2015, she was a visiting professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano. An elected member of the Board of Governors of the École des Ponts since 2009, she directed the AMUR Master’s programme from 2005 to 2016 and co-directed the LATTS programme from 2019 to 2022.

Ongoing research
- Territories in/of the Anthropocene Après m’être penchée sur les infrastructures fortes, remparts d’un urbanisme volontaire dont l’obsolescence dévoile les failles dans le contexte des changements globaux, je m’intéresse aux infrastructures faibles, tout aussi structurantes, héritées, déjà-là, en gestation. Saisir le rapport de l’Anthropocène à l’espace de la grande ville (terme dont la dispute qui travaille cette notion m’intéresse en tant que telle) me déplace vers les marges urbaines, en travaillant toujours la longue durée, dans le contexte très prolifique sur le plan historiographique, des travaux sur l’histoire du futur, l’histoire de l’environnement, l’histoire du paysage, l’histoire des représentations. Ce projet de recherche individuel comporte trois volets qui portent sur la figurabilité de la grande ville, la géopolitique des infrastructures, les paysages de l’habitabilité.
