It will take place on Friday, March 29, 2019,

at the Centre des Archives du Monde du Travail in Roubaix.

This symposium concludes a three-year action research program conducted with the City of Roubaix and the financial support of the Métropole Européenne de Lille. It will put into perspective both the questions raised and the initial results of this work. Indeed, the case of Roubaix is symptomatic of a metropolitan area where urban decline coexists with a process of metropolization that affects the urban agglomeration in an unequal manner. This action research has led to a questioning of the paradigms of metropolitan development as they are currently conceived and implemented, whether in terms of improving the living environment or stimulating economic development and local employment.

This day will be divided into four parts: the first will focus on the role of metropolitan areas in regional development, both within urban areas and on a larger regional scale; the second will look at the place given to urban economic diversity in metropolitan areas, beyond dedicated tertiary zones and "metropolitan function frameworks"; the third focuses on the issue of employment, which goes beyond that of competitiveness; and the last on the capacity of metropolitan areas to provide a high-quality living environment for residents of struggling inner-city areas.

Registration is free but mandatory at the following address: https://metropolesquest.sciencesconf.org/
