Bio

After completing a PhD in economics (at Paris-Dauphine University), Pascal Ughetto quickly turned his attention to sociological issues, consistently focusing on the transformation of work over the medium term. At the Institute for Economic and Social Research between 2000 and 2005, he helped establish a programme of studies on work, before joining Gustave Eiffel University and the LATTS as a senior lecturer and subsequently a professor of sociology. He obtained his HDR in 2012 (The Cycles of Work and its Sociology).

His research focuses on contemporary transformations in work: the rise of the service dimension and customer-centred approaches; skills in the workplace; working conditions and work organisation; management tools and the practice of work. He is interested in how organisation and management shape work by imposing demands on it, and examines the extent to which the organisation supports these demands. From this perspective, he raises the question of the power granted to front-line managers to organise work.

He has conducted surveys in various sectors, companies and public administrations: retail, hospitals, social housing, museums, the Ministry of Finance, local courts, La Poste, logistics, public works and the automotive industry.

Current research: Workload of design engineers and technicians and the right to disconnect in the automotive sector.

He is co-director of the Master’s programme in Change Management and Sociology of Human Resources (MACOR) macor-eiffel.fr

He is chair of the scientific council of Entreprise et Personnel, vice-chair of the Observatoire des cadres and a member of its scientific council, as well as that of ANACT.

Recent publications: Organising Autonomy at Work. Collaborative Work, the Liberated Company, Agile Methods: Work in the Age of Self-Organisation, FYP, 2018; and The New Sociologies of Work: An Introduction to the Sociology of Work, De Boeck, 2018.
