The team behind the ANR METROLAND programme: Commodifying Land: Capital, Inequalities and Conflicts in Sub-Saharan African Metropolitan Peripheries is pleased to invite you to its closing seminar, to be held on 2 and 3 July at Université Paris Cité (Olympe de Gouges Building, Paris 13th arrondissement), with the support of the ANR, the IRD and the Land & Development Technical Committee.
Entitled “Land for Sale: Transactions, Inequalities, Mobilisations. Dialogues from the Outskirts of African Cities”, this conference will present the main findings of four years of research conducted on the outskirts of Nairobi, Dakar and Bamako, in dialogue with researchers in the humanities, social sciences and spatial analysis who are addressing these issues, both on the African continent and beyond.
The outskirts of African cities are one of the main fronts in global urbanisation. These study days will provide a forum for collective discussion on contemporary urbanisation dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa: land markets and value chains, the sociology of property, socio-spatial inequalities, conflicts and mobilisations over land, and the liveability of these territories in transition.
Bilingual round-table discussions (with simultaneous English-French interpretation), an exhibition of field photographs, satellite images and previously unseen visualisations will inform the discussions.
