RUE Seminar (Wednesday, February 8, 2023, 2 p.m.)

Recently appearing in literature on risks and crises, the concept of "compound risk" is appealing because of its ability to reframe the risks associated with the Anthropocene, "super-crises," and, above all, unexpected combinations of alea and vulnerabilities. Borrowing from Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing the concept of "non-scalability" (or, to put it another way, with Olivier Rey, noting that "changing size means changing nature"), we question risk and crisis management and the fruitfulness of the concept of "compound risks" based on our respective fields: the Covid-19 pandemic, flooding in medium-sized cities, and doctrines in the event of a nuclear accident.
