Stève Bernardin

Bio

Stève Bernardin is an associate professor of sociology at Gustave Eiffel University, a researcher at LATTS, and a lecturer at the AP-HP and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.

His doctoral dissertation focused on the public problem of traffic safety in the United States. His research results appeared in edited books and scientific papers, for instance in the journal *Technology and Culture,* the official publication of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT). Stève also worked with colleagues on smart cities and their technological promises. He published his main findings in a co-edited volume of the journal *Réseaux* and in an article released in *Quaderni*. In parallel, he engaged into collective debates on the sociological legacy of the late Joseph Gusfield, which translated into an edited book on *Private Crusades and Public Problems* (in French: *Croisades privées et problèmes publics*). Stève works now on public problems and technological innovation, with a special focus on autonomous vehicles and automated driving in France and the United States.

A former Fulbright scholar, he studied the sociology of science at Harvard University before completing a PhD in political science at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Private Crusades and Public Problems: The Sociological Legacy of Joseph Gusfield

What is a symbolic crusade? How can a private issue become a shared public problem? To answer these questions, this book draws on the seminal work of Joseph Gusfield (1923-2015). It brings together leading scholars, sociologists and political scientists to discuss the intellectual legacy of the late American sociologist. The book not only opens new fields of inquiry for academic research, it also proposes refreshing insights on public problems to citizens willing to go beyond the simplistic explanations all too often associated with the issues that shape their daily lives.
