Right to the city : Housing affordability for migrant workers in China

Zhumin Xu interviendra lors de la conférence annuelle de l’Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) à Greenville, SC, USA les 24-27 octobre 2019

Résumé de son intervention : Using Lefebvre’s concept of “the right to the city”,  this presentation politicizes the discourse of housing along with the land supply system and reveal its social value. The right to the city is defined as a socio-economic right to housing here. This presentation argues that firstly the lack of security housing for all has pushed migrant workers to live in informal housing in China. Secondly, standardization of informal housing led to gentrification with eviction of migrant workers. This research suggests that city governments, enterprises, and other stakeholders should work together to renovate “urban village” and include it into affordable housing system.
